Beginning in v 9, Paul shifts gears. when he prayed for the Colossians, his prayers were filled with thanksgivings. he also filled his prayers with petitions for the Colossians. Col 1:9-14 are Paul’s prayer requests. The central idea is found in the first part of v 10; so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him. At the core of Paul’s prayer is that the church members in Colossae live lives worthy of the grace of Jesus. This is a prayer for their sanctification. Paul desires that believers live lives worthy of the grace of Jesus.

Paul was a thankful person. This passage commends thanksgiving to God for the spiritual gifts he gives. We must give thanks to God for all his gifts. This text, however, teaches that Christians give thanks to God for his spiritual gifts. Why should Christians thank God?

There are two ways to live. We are either in the way of the righteous or in the way of the wicked. Psalm 2 urges us to take refuge in Christ negatively, from the perspective of the wicked who defy God. There are four reasons here to take refuge in Christ.
