Before us is yet another example of how Jesus deals with sinners. What makes the encounter of Jesus and Levi powerful is that we see not just how Jesus deals with sinners, but the worst of sinners. Then words of our Lord in this story sheds even greater divine light on our lord and his mission to sinners.

  1. Jesus’s Command
  2. Levi’s Crowd
  3. Jesus’s Call

In this passage, Luke introduces the preaching and teaching ministry of Jesus. He does not emphasize Jesus’ miracles, but draws our attention to his teaching. To do this, he chooses an episode from Jesus’ ministry in Galilee, when he came to his hometown of Nazareth. I want you to notice three aspects of Christ’s ministry:

  1. The Spirit’s Power upon Jesus’ Teaching (vv 14-15)
  2. The Messianic Anointing of for Jesus’ Teaching (vv 16-21)
  3. The Familiar Rejection of Jesus’ Teaching (vv 22-30)

We can learn much here about temptation, and we will. But this is not so much about the nature of temptation as it is about the victorious obedience and submission of the son of God to the will of the Father. In fact, the Devil’s basis for temptation is Christ’s identity as the son of God.v3: If you are the son of God… v9: If you are the son of God. How did Jesus prove himself to be the son of Godin his temptations?

  1. God’s Son trusted his Father for Provision
  2. God’s Son trusted his Father for the Kingdom
  3. God’s Son trusted his Father for his Promises

As the Baptist entered the scene, a general spirit of rank sinfulness had settled over Israel, especially among the spiritual leadership. What was John’s prophetic ministry to the Jewish people to help them get ready for Christ? This morning , I want us to see three important aspects of John’s message, all of which still have important instruction for us today.

  1. Repent of Sin
  2. Prepare for Christ
  3. Bear Fruit

This Passage is about the hope that Jesus brings as a former age is being brought to an end, and a new age is about to begin. Here emblems of an old age passing away are brought face to face with Jesus. Some of these emblems have to do with the Law: circumcision, purification, consecration, and even the temple itself. Other emblems are seen in the elderly, godly saints and their satisfaction in Christ.

(last week) 1. The name of Jesus

(this week)2. The Consolation of Israel

3. The Redemption of Israel
