The Word Became Flesh (John 1:14)

Title: The Word Became Flesh

Passage: John 1:14

Speaker: Pastor Ryan Martin

Service: Sunday Morning Worship Service

Date: December 22, 2019

As a distillation of monumental Christian teaching, John 1:14 is almost as important as John 1:1. In this Christmas season, it is good for us to consider the nature of the preexistent Christ, as we did last week. Today we will go further, however. John 1:14 shows three additional truths about the Word.

The Word Was God (John 1:1-3)

The story of the nativity is wonderful, but Christmas shines best when we think of who Christ is, and what his birth really represents. Jesus’ birth was not merely the birth of some ordinary Jewish child in a small obscure Jewish town. As our text today makes plain, that one that Mary bore was actually and truly God.

Filled in Christ

Colossians 2: 10-12

We have something better than philosophy in Christ because of who he is (v 9), and because of what he has done for us (vv 10-15). What has the Son of God done for us that makes him so worthy of our continued faith?

At the head of a new section, Paul draws together all that he has been saying since 1:24 into a powerful, simple statement. Paul now puts things very simply. This is what he wants for them as an apostle. This is what he is aiming at in his ministry. Here is how to live the Christian life.

Lasting Treasure (Colossians 2:1-5)

Title: Lasting Treasure

Passage: Colossians 2:1-5

In Col 1:27, Paul stated the goal of Christian ministry: that we may present everyone mature in Christ. The word ‘mature’ means complete devotion. Our text today is a summary sketch of what it means to be a mature Christian. I’ve divided his depiction here of complete devotion or maturity into four ideas this morning.

Him We Proclaim (Colossians 1:28-29)

Title: Him We Proclaim

Passage: Colossians 1:28-29

How are we to help other spiritually? The answer to this is a more fundamental question. What is the nature of Christian ministry? In our passage, we see Paul explain his blueprint for Christian ministry.

Joy in Suffering (Colossians 1:24-27)

Title: Joy in Suffering

Passage: Colossians 1:24-27

Speaker: Pastor Ryan Martin

If you’re a Christian this morning, you should expect to suffer. How will you respond when trials and afflictions turn your world upside down? These questions are why we need to listen to Paul. Paul says, Now I rejoice in my sufferings. How can Paul say that he rejoices in his sufferings?

The “First Pope’s” Doctrine of Scripture (2 Peter)

Title: The “First Pope’s” Doctrine of Scripture

Passage: 2 Peter

Speaker: Pastor Ryan Martin

Service: Sunday Morning Worship Service

Date: October 24, 2019

This morning we will look, from his own inspired pen, at Peter’s own view of Scripture. We will see that Peter had a very high view of Scripture, but he wrote Scripture as the way of preserving the Word of Christ for the church.

Persevering in the Faith (Colossians 1:23)

Title: Persevering in the Faith

Passage: Colossians 1:23

Speaker: Pastor Ryan Martin

Service: Sunday Morning Worship Service

Date: October 20, 2019

Faith is the condition that brings us the riches of Christ. Yet it is not any ‘faith’ that saves. The faith that saves is a faith that perseveres. Saving faith is not some opinion or momentary good feeling. It is not here one day, gone the next. Saving faith remains. The key idea is simple: believers must continue in the faith.

Reconciliation Accomplished & Applied (Colossians 1:21-22)

Title: Reconciliation Accomplished & Applied

Passage: Colossians 1:20

Speaker: Pastor Ryan Martin

Service: Sunday Morning Worship Service

Date: October 13, 2019

The goal of these words are headed into verse 23: if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast. Paul’s goal is in part to strengthen their faith and commitment to Christ. It is also to reaffirm for them that Christ’s work applies to them especially. So this is what I want you to see: We must remain committed to Christ because of what he has done for us.
